Shallow Day

Even in the dry, desert landscape of Southern Utah, nourishment can be found in the music of Shallow Day.  Their lush rock and flowing melodies are a breath of fresh air to the local music scene.  This new alternative rock group can be comparable to U2, Coldplay, and Muse.  Shallow Day consists of Mike “Seels” Seely on vocals and guitars, Justin Vaughn on bass, and Wes Vaughn on drums.  From the small town of St. George, these brothers have emerged as a beacon upon a hill and plan on taking their music to the top.

During his high school years, Seels never thought he’d play guitar again after running his fingers through a table saw.  “Fortunately I was just learning to play at the time, so after my hand healed, I just started over and adapted to the circumstances,” he comments.  In 2001, Seels started dating Brooke Vaughn, who he later married.  Her brother, Wes, asked him to play guitar with him and his friends.  Wes was coming off a motocross injury that broke both wrists, which left him learning to play drums without normal wrist movement.

With Seels, Wes, and others, the band Stand-by was formed and was able to share the stage with Tommy Lee, Unwritten Law, Pennywise, and Zebrahead.  After years of playing together, Stand-by dissolved and with a new lead singer and bass player, Falstaff was created.  By 2006, complications arose once again, leaving Seels and Wes on their own.

Seels spent the next year writing and recording ideas.  He finally decided that it wasn’t worth the frustration of dealing with another singer, so he took control of the mic and Shallow Day was born.  Wes was able to convince his younger brother, Justin Vaughn, to step up to the bass plate.  Justin’s drive and ambition is what finally completed the family trio and Shallow Day feels as if nothing can stop them.

During the summer of 2009, Shallow Day recorded their first EP entitled Shine.  They spent a weekend in San Diego filming a music video to their first single “Daybreak Dr.” which was directed by Ben Lund.  Their music has been featured in commercials and short films.

Their latest success is with the song Twilight (what have you done to my wife?).  The video that accompanied the song has had huge success online, with over 120,000 views its first week on youtube.  These first milestones are just baby steps to the big career that awaits this young fresh band.
